The World War II venues in Rome.

The German formation marched from the far end of Via Rasella, to the spot on which I'm standing. Here, the bomb detonated.
German troops chased the Partisans to this corner.
An innocent civilian opened a window in this building to see what was happening. German troops opened fire with automatic weapons. The bullet holes have been left since 1944 to mark the event.
Some of the Partisans escaped through this alley. Revenge, Nazi-style, was swift. The order was given that 10 civilians were to be executed for every German soldier killed. We now set out for the site of that reprisal massacre.
On 24 March 1944, 335 victims were selected mostly from groups already condemned and transported here to the Fosse Ardeatine, the Ardeatine Cave. In groups of five, they were forced to kneel and one bullet was fired into their brain. After a day of killing, all entrances to the cave were dynamited so that no trace of the massacre would be found.
After the war, quite by accident, the site was discovered and the bodies were identified and re-buried in this concrete mausoleum.
