The approach to Troina.

To follow the route of the "Big Red One" would require an approach from Cerami, west of Troina. Time constraints required us to approach from the south. We stopped to view a church demolished by artillery fire, evidence of the sad result of war.
Like this church, Troina was demolished by constant artillery pounding. In the years since the war, a picturesque town arose from the debris of the battle.
Our presence arouses the curiosity of a local.
Modern Troina is still imposing.
Shortly, we would be looking back at this spot from the highest point in Troina - the church seen at the upper right.
Before we leave the ruins, my thoughts drift back to the carnage that ensued during the first 6 days of August, 1943. Frightened men battling in 100 degree heat and high humidity. Momentarily, the 21st century pushes its way back into my thoughts...
